FAMO fascia movement (formerly Slings Myofascial Training) refers to what Art of Motion’s co-founder Karin Gurtner has developed from Tom Myers ‘Anatomy Trains’ concept. Karin has taken his concept into a movement discipline using the underlying principles of Pilates and Yoga and blending them with movement along the body’s myofascial lines to create a fully integrated and structurally balanced body both inside and out. The exercises aim to give long term movement efficiency, which gives us both a dynamically stable body but with muscles strength and resilience. Its focus is on the fascial tissue in the body; the body’s interconnected web beneath our skin that connects everything to everything. The old adage ‘the hip bone is connected to the backbone, etc, has more truth to it than we might really imagine.
The fascial tissue likes to slide and glide and sometimes it can get stuck; this can create restrictions in our movement as well as pain. With FAMO fascia movement we can help to get the tissue moving again using props such as spikey balls to help with the tissue’s hydration and nourishment, this then helps to unstick some of these areas creating a sense of ease and fluidity to our movements and therefore reducing pain.
I was lucky enough to become one of the first seven in the UK to qualify as a Advanced FAMO Fascia Movement Teacher and was taught directly by Karin Gurtner. Since then, talk of fascia has become more and more widespread, there are now many different types of fascial training available, but for me, starting on the path of learning about the body’s fascia and undertaking the FAMO to completion has really changed my body for the best. My posture is better, my pain less frequent and I have been able to pass these benefits onto my clients through my own teaching.
FAMO fascia movement can help improve the following:
- Tissue nourishment
- Adaptability
- Elasticity
- Whole body movement
- Multidimensional strength
- Dynamic stability
- Movement joy & freedom
